For his 2009 Dæmonology series, Dan Perfect has conjured 26 numinous beings, from Amaethon – the Welsh agricultural deity – to Zadkiel – the biblical angel of mercy. They are a strange and indifferent company, carefully chosen for the alphabetic coincidence of their names rather than their imagined attributes. Drawn from a range of traditions, this arbitrary evocation appears a deliberate snub to the fiction of their existence.

Full of unusual colours and abstract shapes, these portraits examine the notions of illusion, projection and the make-believe, while firmly referencing our need to animate the world around us.
