Anima
 – Paintings by Dan Perfect

Dan Perfect’s paintings begin with improvisational mark-making on paper. That vocabulary is then expanded through digital compositing to inspire large scale painted canvases full of detail, colour and dramatic gesture. These evoke a natural world bound up with technology; bold brush marks and sinewy flashes of neon dart across fluid, spacious backgrounds, whilst nascent figures, masks and beasts emerge as if summoned from some primal formlessness.
Implicit in Perfect’s practice is the question of how and when something animate arises; how we recognise ourselves emerge from the vast flowing river of sense-data and our endless surprise at burgeoning self-consciousness and mutating identity.

Perfect’s recent paintings eschew previously explicit forms to create a more abstract sensate field, with a profusion of drifting elements. Several possible simultaneous readings are suggested: the paintings as portraits; the frenzied actions of biology on a micro-scale; the hybrid forms of human information language.

Presented in the Long Gallery, Painter, Painter: Dan Perfect, Fiona Rae is an exhibition of large-scale recent paintings by British artists Fiona Rae and Dan Perfect.

Both these artists find space between the abstract and the representational world in unique and distinctive ways. Committed to the expressive and enduring language of painting, they share a deep interest in our contemporary experience refracted through technology and cultural media, with manifestly different outcomes in their work. Perfect and Rae are married and live together, working in separate studios in the same building in London’s East End.

This is the first major simultaneous presentation of their paintings in a public gallery, and the first dedicated contemporary painting exhibition at Nottingham Castle for many years.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue designed by Peter Willberg, featuring texts by Martin Herbert, and is available to purchase for a special exhibition price of £12 from our shop (normal RRP £18.95).

Exhibition continues May 3 to July 6 2014
